Stain Guide: Grass

This is a 4th generation dry cleaner's guide for removing a grass stain!

What you need
  • All-purpose stain-remover spray (with the enzyme protease)
  • Powdered oxygen bleach or 3% hydrogen peroxide (as needed)
Steps
  1. Wipe, rinse, or gently brush away any physical bits of the remaining stain.
  2. Tamp or pat in the all-purpose stain remover (the enzyme needed to break down the protein in grass is protease).
  3. Allow this pretreatment to sit on the stain for 15 minutes.
  4. Wash as recommended on the care label.
  5. Inspect before drying. If the stain was removed, dry as recommended on the care label. If not, follow steps 6 and 7.
  6. Soak the stained garment in hot water and powdered oxygen bleach overnight OR spray the garment with 3% hydrogen peroxide and allow it to air-dry.
  7. Rewash and inspect before drying.

HOW TO REMOVE A GRASS STAIN FROM YOUR CLOTHES This is a 4th generation dry cleaner’s guide to removing a grass stain! A grass stain is known as a protein AND oxidizable / bleachable stain, or a combination stain. Grass stains require enzymes to break down the proteins and bleach, usually oxygen bleach, to correct the color. There are 4 main types of stains: greasy, oxidizable, particulate, and enzymatic. 1) Rinse and brush any physical bits of the stain away with cool or warm water. 2) Treat the stain with a stain remover that includes protease in its ingredient list. This is the enzyme that breaks down proteins. Lightly brush in the stain remover and wait at least 1 hour before washing. 3) Wash as recommended by the care label. 4) Prepare a basis/bucket/sink/tub with hot water (ideally 120-140 F or 50-60 C) and add 1/8-1/4 cup of powdered oxygen bleach (sodium percarbonate*, think OxiClean and Vanish). Let this sit for at least 8 hours if possible, overnight is ideal. OR spray the stain with 3% hydrogen peroxide and allow to air dry. 5) Inspect the stain, if it still remains repeat step 4. It may take a few more tries depending on the severity. 5) Dry as recommended by the care label. The sooner you get to the stain the easier it will be to remove. grass grassstain laundry grassstainremoval howtoremoveagrassstain removegrassstain drycleaning clean cleaning
